  • Two Quick Goals Lifts MRU Over Lethbridge
    January 12, 2018
LETHBRIDGE – Propelled by two goals in a two-minute span in the second period, the Mount Royal Cougars extended their win streak and edged the Lethbridge Pronghorns 3-2 in the first game of a home-and-home series. The win is the Cougars third in a row after sweeping the Regina Cougars to open the 2018 portion of the schedule last weekend and improves the Cougars' record to 5-11-3-0 on the season. The regulation win also vaults the Cougars ahead of the Calgary Dinos for the final playoff spot in Canada West. The loss is the Pronghorns fourth in a row and really damages hopes of a playoff appearance, falling six points behind Mount Royal with only nine games remaining. The Pronghorns record is now 4-11-2-2. Kyra Greig and Brett Campbell scored for the Pronghorns, while Rachle Piitz scored twice for Mount Royal, including the eventual game winning goal, and Anna Purschke picked up the other marker. First-year forward Kyra Greig opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the game, slipping by a Cougar defender near centre ice and after her initial shot was stopped, she potted the rebound behind Cougar goaltender Zoe De Beauville for her fourth of the season. Piitz got into the action seven minutes later to tie the score, walking out of the corner and while her first shot was stopped, she too capitalized on her own rebound. However, before the period expired the Pronghorns regained their lead. Brett Campbell took a pass in the slot of Greig and made no mistake with a backhand from the slot to give the Pronghorns a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. In a period that the Cougars outshot the Pronghorns 14-8, all the damage the Cougars would end up needing happened in a 2:01 span just past the halfway mark of the period. Purschke brought the game level at 10:57 on a two-on-one and Piitz deflected one past Pronghorn goaltender Alicia Anderson on the power play for her second of the night. While the Pronghorns weren't able to find the equalizer in the third period, it wasn't due to a lack of effort, outshooting the Cougars 14-6 but De Beauville wouldn't allow a third goal against. Greig had a great chance early off a Campbell rebound but De Beauville made a big glove save and she was equal to the task on two late chances from Kaitlyn Breitkreuz and Tricia Van Vaernebergh. De Beauville finished the night with 24 saves to secure her sixth win of the season, while Anderson turned aside 23 shots in the loss. The back half of the home-and-home series will go tomorrow night at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary, puck drops at 6:00pm

That motivation didn't translate into success for MRU in the first period, as they failed to register their first shot on net until only 4 minutes remained in the opening frame. The University of Regina also got off to a slow start but was able to create some pressure late in the period. Regina went to the power play 3 times in the period, testing MRU's netminder Zoe De Beauville on multiple occasions, but De Beauville was up for the task, turning away all 7 Regina shots in the period. Lethbridge – A night after suffering a 4-1 loss at home, the Mount Royal Cougars rebounded with a 3-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns to earn their first regulation win of the season and a weekend split in the first of two home-and-home series between the two teams. Megan Carver scored twice to pace the Cougars and Tianna Ko scored the other Cougar goal. Zoe Debeauville made 18 saves to earn her first shutout of the season. Pronghorn goaltender Alicia Anderson once again gave her team a chance to win, stopping 39 of the 42 shots she faced. Entering the game still in search of their first regulation win of the season, the Cougars took the early play to the Pronghorns, peppering Anderson with 15 first period shots, but as she has done throughout her career, Anderson was outstanding in the Pronghorns crease. She made solid saves off of the sticks of Devonie Deschamps, Shawni Rodeback and Kate Scidmore. After weathering the Cougars storm early in the period, the Pronghorns did muster some late pressure, finishing with nine first period shots, but Debeauville turned aside a trio of chances in the final minute from Alli Borrow, Mackenzie Gal and Jodi Gentile. After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the second frame was all Mount Royal, outshooting the Pronghorns 18-2 and striking twice. Megan Carver opened the scoring just past the five minute mark, after her shot from the circle redirected off a Pronghorn defender and past Anderson. With the team's play to four-on-four, Tianna Ko beat a pair of Pronghorns off the half wall and tucked one in past Anderson short side. Before the third period hit the five minute mark, Carver picked up her second of the night while shorthanded to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Blocking a shot just inside the Cougars end, Carver raced away on a breakaway, deking to her backhand and it looked like Anderson had made another spectacular save with the glove, but the puck trickled in for Carver's third of the season. While the Pronghorns did generate a few chances following the Cougar's third goal, they could not beat Debeauville on this night. Debeauville made a solid shoulder save off of Brett Campbell on a Pronghorn two-on-one and flashed the glove to turn aside Gentile off a nice individual rush. The Pronghorns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Vancouver to face the two-time defending Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds. The Cougars will return home to host the Manitoba Bisons for a pair of games at the Flames Community Arena.
