Wesmen inch closer to securing playoff berth with win over Cougars

WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team inched closer to securing a playoff spot by recording a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-12) victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars Friday evening in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the win goes to 13-10, tied with Brandon for 5th spot in the Canada West Men's Volleyball Conference standings. The Cougars fall to 12-11, currently tied with Saskatchewan for the final playoff spot.

The visiting Cougars came out strong in the opening set, leading 16-9 at the technical break. Winnipeg led by three kills by Casey Schouten, scored eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 17-17. The Cougars took a 21-20 lead late but Winnipeg scored four of the next five points to win the opening set 25-22.

Winnipeg used the momentum in the second set to lead 16-15 at the set break. The two teams battled to 23-23 when a block and a kill by Schouten ended the set in Winnipeg's favor by a score of 25-23.

The Cougars were no match for the Wesmen in the third set. The Wesmen jumped out to a 16-8 lead and never looked back winning the final set in convincing fashion by a 25-12 margin.

Schouten led the Wesmen with 14 kills, while adding two blocks. David Bommersbach finished with 11 kills, eight digs and three blocks.

Tyler Schmidt led the Cougars with 10 kills. Riley Friesen added seven. Jonathan Phillips led the team in digs with eight.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
