    Cougars and Wesmen battle for final playoff spots The final weekend of the season happens to be the biggest for both Mount Royal and Winnipeg. Tied for sixth place at 12-10, both sides are looking to improve their playoff positioning but neither team has actually clinched a spot in the postseason. Saskatchewan trails both teams by a single win but have the 2-20 TRU Wolfpack this weekend and could jump either Mount Royal or Winnipeg if either team manages to get swept.

Brandon’s Roy Ching led all scorers with 23.5 points in the match. His counterpart Riley Friesen led Mount Royal with 23.0 points.

While Brandon has more wins (11), the Cougars are ahead of them in the standings with a better winning percentage. Royal Cougars (8-6) at War Memorial Gym, doubling U Sport’s sixth-ranked squad with 14.5 blocks en route to the weekend sweep. With the two wins, UBC vaults ahead of Mt. Royal for fifth in the division.

    Class of 2017 introduces Mitch Newman from the U18 Canuck Dinos Mitch projects as a physical, athletic, creative setter. He is a tremendous and versatile athlete. He can play multiple positions. He made Alberta’s provincial team and our Youth National Development Program as a left side in 2015. In 2016, he was again selected to both but as a setter. While he can play both positions at a CIS level, he is going to set at MRU.

The Cougars missed an opportunity to sweep TRU and move to 3-1. Now their attention turns to UBC Okanagan who has won only four sets this season. Four points this weekend would put the Cougars right in the thick of things in the Canada West playoff race.
