    Mount Royal University used separate 12-2 and 8-0 runs in the second half to pull away from the University of Regina for an 87-77 road win on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. All five starters broke into double figures for Mount Royal, led by 20-point performances by both Josh Ross and Glen Yang. Ross finished with 22 points and eight rebounds while leading all players with 38 minutes on the floor, while Yang scored 20 and dished out a game-high six assists. Mount Royal (6-5) also had 12-point nights from Noah Lewis and Nick Tancon and a 10-point effort from John Hegwood. Hegwood added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Tancon fell just short of that mark with nine boards. MRU turned the ball over only 13 times compared to Regina's 24, and ultimately the visitors' 28-14 advantage in points scored off turnovers was the difference. The game started out as a back-and-forth affair with Mount Royal jumping out to an early 15-8 lead before Regina closed out the first quarter on a 9-0 run to go ahead 20-17 after the opening 10 minutes. But Mount Royal pulled ahead for good in the second, scoring 10 consecutive points to take a lead the visiting Cougars would hang on to for the rest of the way. MRU's two big second-half runs both came at pivotal times. Regina had made it a one-possession game in the third before Mount Royal's 12-2 run – punctuated by three-pointers by both Ross and Charn Gill – gave the visitors a 13-point advantage. Regina scored nine of the next 11 points to get back to within six, but that's when MRU scored eight straight points to go up by 14 with only six minutes to go. Brandon Tull led Regina with 16 points as the Cougars fall to 7-4 on the season. Benjamin Hillis and Alex Igual both had 11, while Shawn Lathan scored 10. The two teams will close out the weekend set on Saturday night (8:00) at the CKHS.

    CALGARY – The second game of the weekend series between the Mount Royal University Cougars and Thompson Rivers University WolfPack tipped off Saturday night at Kenyon Court. The WolfPack were able to bounce back with a 65-61 win after losing the first game on Friday night. Both teams struggled to convert their shots on the night as both teams struggled to put up points on the offensive end.

    CALGARY, Alta – The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack made their way to Kenyon Court on Friday night for their matchup with the Mount Royal University Cougars. The Cougars were able to defend their home court and come away with their fifth win of the year, taking a 91-74 victory over the Wolfpack. The Cougars were led offensively by Josh Ross who finished with 24 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and a near triple-double. The Cougars also used big games from Glen Yang and LJ Hegwood who added 18 points in the game, while Yang contributed to the win with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Cougars shot 52% from the field, moving the ball, finishing with 23 assists and finding good looks for their teammates. Mike Rouault and Joe Davis both scored 16 points leading the Wolfpack offense. Luke Morris also had a big game for the Wolfpack, finishing with a near double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The two teams went back and forth to start the first quarter, as neither team could take control early. The Cougars found open looks from the three-point line but were unable to convert early in the quarter. Both teams played tight aggressive defense forcing contested shots and forcing a combined 36% shooting in the quarter. The Cougars were able to take a 15-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Nolan Willett came into the second and scored five quick points for the Wolfpack. After the teams tied the score at 20 the Cougars were able to retake the lead, led by two made three-pointers by Charn Gill. The Wolfpack were able to find open looks in their attempt to get back into the game, but couldn’t get their shots to fall. The Cougars were able to take advantage and grow their lead to eight with two minutes remaining in the first half. Once the buzzer sounded to end the first half the Cougars led 35-29. Ross took charge for the Cougars in the first half, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and the Wolfpack were led by Rouault’s 11 points and five rebounds. The two teams came out of the halftime break trading baskets and looking to grab the momentum. The Cougars were able to break through and managed to grow their lead to 14 with five minutes to go in the third. Hegwood found success getting to the rim, while leading the Cougar attack with 8 Points in the quarter. The Cougars were able to handle to Wolfpack push to get back in the game and they took a 13-point lead into the final quarter of play. The Cougars were able to come out in the fourth and take control of the game, keeping their lead in double-digits. Ross hit two threes to expand the Cougar lead and not give the Wolfpack a chance to complete their comeback. The Cougars were able to convert on 46% of their threes in the quarter, as their lead continued to grow. Once the final quarter came to an end the Cougars were able to take the first game of the series with a 17-point victory. The series will continue, Saturday night with game two tipping off at 6 p.m. MDT at Kenyon Court. The game can be live streamed on www.canadawest.com.

    ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – A thoroughly dominant second-half performance sent the Mount Royal Cougars to an 88-59 win over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday evening. The score was level at halftime, 41-41, but the Cougars outscored the host Cascades 47-18 after the break to salvage a weekend split at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre. UFV had won Friday’s opener 86-80. Mount Royal star Josh Ross, limited to 11 points on Friday, took charge in the rematch, racking up 25 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Sukhman Sandhu, with 20 points and six boards, was the lone Cascade to score in double figures. The Cougars squared their record at 2-2, while UFV fell to 1-3.

    ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team rode a balanced attack and some clutch plays down the stretch to its first victory of the young season, 86-80 over the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday. The Cascades, playing their home opener at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre, saw six players score in double figures, led by Vick Toor’s 17. Sukhman Sandhu’s tip-in off a missed free throw was the key play in the final minute, making it a two-possession game with 21 seconds left and allowing the UFV squad to send their fans home happy.

    CALGARY, Alta. – The Mount Royal Cougars and Winnipeg Wesmen tipped off Saturday night to cap a great weekend of basketball at Kenyon Court. After the Cougars took the first game of the series on Friday night, the Wesmen were able to come away with a 90-78 win and a series split. Leading the way for the Wesmen was Narcisse Ambanza who filled the stat sheet with 30 points, 10, rebounds and 4 assists. The Wesmen shot the ball very well as they were able to make 50 percent of their shots and 40 percent of their threes. Glen Yang lead the way for the Cougars 23 points on 8-14 shooting. Josh Ross had another strong showing for the Cougars as he finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals and a near triple-double. Both teams struggled to get the ball to go in to start the game, resulting in a 6-4 score for the Wesmen after the first four minutes. As both teams started to heat up, the Wesmen broke out to an early lead, highlighted by two deep threes from Ambanza. The Wesmen got out in transition and did a good job moving the ball to get open looks and take control of the game with an 11-point lead. The Cougars responded by coming out of a timeout with a 9-2 run, they were carried in the quarter by LJ Hegwood who finished with nine points. When the buzzer sounds to end the first, the Wesmen were up 23-17. The second quarter started out with both teams making runs as Ross started the second quarter on a 5-0 run for the Cougars to bring the game back within one, but the Wesmen were able to respond with 10 straight points of their own. Of course, the Cougars were able to answer with a run of their own as Yang hit threes on two straight possessions to lead the Cougars charge to tie the game at 36. The Cougars were able to take control in the last two minutes taking a 43-38 lead at the end of the half. Joshua Gandier made three three-pointers in the quarter to spark the Wesmen offense while Yang lead the Cougars comeback finishing with 10 points for the quarter. The Wesmen came out of the break running in transition and finding some easy baskets, eventually taking the lead on an Ambanza three. The Wesmen started the quarter outscoring the Cougars by 12 to take a seven-point lead after the first six minutes of the third. Yang continued his hot shooting night adding another nine points in the quarter. The end of the quarter saw high paced, back and forth action with the two teams trading baskets. Ambanza gave the Wesmen a big boost with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to keep their lead at 7 going into the fourth. Neither team could get an advantage to start the fourth as the Cougars looked to make a comeback on their home floor. The Wesmen lead fell to only three but some good defensive possessions and open looks allowed them to take a 12-point lead with four and a half minutes remaining in the game. Down the stretch the Cougars had trouble making their shots, allowing the Wesmen to take a commanding lead with just over two minutes to go. The Wesmen slowed down the game as the Cougars attempted to make their move and close the deficit. In the end, the clock ran out on the Cougars and the Wesmen bounced back with a 12-point win to split the opening weekend. Both teams are back in action Friday night as the Cougars head west to take on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and the Wesmen return home to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
