Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week, Feb 13-19 2019

CALGARY – It was the spectacular play of these two players that got the women's volleyball team into the playoffs and the men's hockey team into their fifth consecutive semi-finals, therefore they have been selected as the Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for the week of February 6-12, 2019.

Coming into the final weekend of the 2018/19 regular season, Mount Royal found themselves outside of the playoffs looking in.

They needed to sweep Saskatchewan and have other teams drop points to get in; which meant the Cougars needed some heroic performances from their players. Cassidy Kitchen, hailing from Terrace, BC, would play a major role in Mount Royal's two-win weekend.

Kitchen had 11 digs and a game-leading 20 kills as the Cougars would win a five-set thriller Friday afternoon, while Saturday she would dig up another 18 and kill 15 more as Mount Royal won 3-0 to complete the sweep.

The Bachelor of Science undergraduate finished the weekend with a total of 40 points, 35 kills, and 29 digs.

Thanks to wins from Brandon and Trinity Western, the Cougars clinched a playoff spot for the fourth consecutive season and will play the Spartans this weekend in the Canada West quarterfinals.

While the women's volleyball team got themselves into the playoffs, the Canada West hockey playoffs kicked off.

Number five ranked MRU travelled to Vancouver to take on number four UBC and it was the only quarterfinal match-up to go to a third game.

Thanks to the inspiring play of fifth-year Zach Henry Mount Royal was able to come away with the series win.

It was a back and forth battle this weekend as Mount Royal took the first game 4-2. UBC responded on Saturday, only to come up short with a Sunday win from the Cougars.

Henry finished with four points on the weekend, highlighted by a shorthanded goal on Saturday. He played a huge role on the penalty kill for the Cougars. The Calgary born forward was a key contributor in the win with a plus four rating through the three games.

MRU now travels to Saskatchewan to take on the number one Huskies. The series starts at 7:00 pm CST on Friday and can be watched at canadawest.tv.
