Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week, Feb 6-12 2019

CALGARY – Two veteran players who majorly contributed on senior night, have been selected as the Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for the week of February 6-12, 2019.

Both of our hockey teams played a home and home with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. It was senior's weekend, with the men's hockey team honouring their four graduating players Friday and Saturday the women's team bid farewell to their three seniors.

Davids Stephens celebrated his last home game on Friday with a goal and an assist that played a huge role in Mount Royal's 5-2 victory. On Saturday, he continued to shine with a beautiful goal to start the second period. This completed a three-point weekend and vaulted him into the team lead for points in the 2018-2019 season.

The MRU forward plays big minutes for Cougars Hockey and is relied on in all situations. He will need to continue this inspiring play this weekend at UBC for the first round of playoffs. The first game of the best-of-three matchup begins this Friday at 7:30 PM PST in Vancouver.

Hailing from Whitehorse, Yukon, the fifth year is finishing up his Bachelor of Business.

Coming into the final weekend of the 2018/19 regular season, Mount Royal's women's hockey team was looking to move into fifth place with two victories over Lethbridge. MRU captain and fifth year, Shawni Rodeback, was determined to make this happen with inspired play on her last weekend at home.

After the Cougars put themselves in the lead Friday in Lethbridge, Rodeback helped close up shop and preserve her goalie De Beauville's shutout.

Saturday was an emotional night as Mount Royal's three senior players were honoured before the final home game. It was a memorable night for the captain who would find the back of the net twice, add a helper to cap off her three-point performance and help her team win 6-2 in their last game at home.

The sweep marks MRU's best season since joining Canada West, with the most wins and total points in the standings.

They will head to Saskatoon to play the Huskies, a team they went 2-2 against in the regular season, in the Canada West quarterfinals. The Cougars will hope to continue making program history by reaching the semifinals for the first time. Puck drop is 7:00PM CT and can be viewed on CanadaWest.tv
