CALGARY – Two soccer superstars have been named Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for the week of September 18-25, 2018.
The Cougars women's soccer team soccer had a terrific weekend on the road in Saskatchewan, this was in part due to the goalscoring rampage Janai Martens went on.
Saturday afternoon, on the wet artificial turn at U of R field, Martens was a poacher in front of goal slotting both Erin Holt passes into the corners of the net. On Sunday Martens opened up the scoring again as her shot from outside the box found its way into the net. It would be the first of three as the MRU Cougars shut down the Huskies 3-0.
The Cougars women's soccer team have extended their win streak to three games and now sit 4-2-0.
It was a Jekyll and Hyde sort of weekend for the Cougars men's soccer team as they fought valiantly but ultimately fell 1-0 Friday to UBC and lost 4-0 Saturday to the TRU WolfPack. In both games, Daniel Harrison was named MVP by Coach Ryan Gyakia, who described the third year centreback as the best player of the weekend.
The Cougars men's soccer team now sits at 3-5-0, fourth in the Prairie Divison but only on goal difference, and look to snap the losing streak this weekend where they play a Home and Home with the UofC Dinos.
