CALGARY - Two hockey players helped their teams earn sweeps this weekend, and they've been named the Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for our first week back from the break.
The Mount Royal Cougars women's hockey team started off the new year with a bang, sweeping the Regina Cougars on home ice and shutting them out in both contests.
Goaltender Zoe De Beauville recorded a total of 49 saves, 23 on Friday night and another 26 on Saturday afternoon, over the weekend and added two shut outs to her totals for the 2017-18 season. De Beauville has played a total of 189 minutes without allowing a goal as she recorded a shut out against Alberta on Dec. 2, just before the break. These were the second-year goaltender's third and fourth shut outs of the season, tied for second for most in the conference.
The Cougars head out on the road to take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday and return home for the second half of the home-and-home series on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
On the men's side, the Cougars improved their record to 8-9-1 after a weekend road sweep of the Regina Cougars.
Second-year Jesse Lees arguably had one of the best games of his career, scoring four goals in their 8-2 win Regina on Friday night. This was the first Canada West four-goal game since 2015 and ties the Mount Royal team record for most goals in a single conference regular season game. This was also just the third hat-trick of the 2017-18 Canada West season. The defenceman has scored eight goals on the season after this performance. On Saturday, MRU went on to complete the sweep with a 4-2 win over Regina in a Battle of the Cougars.
The Cougars face the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Jan. 12-13, with a home-and-home series. MRU plays at Flames Community Arenas on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
